The OWHC Secretary General takes part in a key moment for the future development of the World Heritage site of Dubrovnik!

Dubrovnik, Croatia

On May 9, 2024, in the Great Hall of the City of Dubrovnik, an important session of the city council took place, during which the councillors have determined the further direction and development of Dubrovnik regarding the preservation of the historical city:

  1. Proposal for a decision on the conditions of entry, traffic and exit of vehicles from the traffic zone in the protected cultural-historical complex and buffer zone of the City of Dubrovnik
  2. Assessment of tourism carrying capacity in order to determine the effects and consequences of tourism development, and eventually implement measures to control the number of visitors

The Secretary General, Mr. Mikhaël De Thyse, mentioned to the councillors how exemplary is Dubrovnik and that what has been achieved so far is proof that it is possible to improve cities and ensure the sustainable development of historic urban areas, not only through the protection of heritage but also in the use of heritage as a resource for sustainable development.
