The National Association of Mexican World Heritage Cities was created in 1996 with the objective of uniting efforts to work for the protection, development and promotion of Mexican cities recognized as “World Heritage” by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The Association is composed of the cities of Campeche, Mexico City and Xochimilco, Guanajuato, Morelia, Oaxaca, Puebla, Queretaro, San Miguel de Allende, Tlacotalpan and Zacatecas.

The city of San Miguel de Allende hosted the commemoration of the twentieth anniversary of the National Association of Mexican World Heritage Cities, during which representatives of member cities gathered.
