Icherisheher, Azerbaijan, wins the Prix Jean-Paul-L’Allier for Heritage 2024

Icherisheher, Azerbaijan

At the 17th World Congress of the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC), held in Cordoba from September 24 to 27, 2024, the Walled City of Baku, known as Icherisheher, was awarded the prestigious Jean-Paul-L’Allier Heritage Prize. This prize, awarded every two years, recognizes OWHC member cities that stand out for their exceptional efforts to protect, conserve and enhance urban heritage.

The project stands out for the restoration of the Khans Palace complex, the creation of the largest park in the old city, and the integration of accessible and comfortable public spaces. These initiatives have enabled Icherisheher to become an example of sustainable heritage management, focusing on the well-being of residents while preserving the city’s cultural heritage.

The project was marked by the active participation of local residents and authorities, as well as by the use of new technologies in the Khans Palace Museum. These elements were essential in combining culture, sustainable development and social inclusion.

The presentation of the Jean-Paul-L’Allier Award to Icherisheher underlines the city’s commitment to protecting its rich cultural heritage while responding to the contemporary challenges of urban life. Congratulations to Icherisheher on this well-deserved recognition!
